"Caroi, I was out pruning the Honeycrisp trees near 12 Mile Road when I noticed a black-and-white cat resting in the fork of a tree with his front paws crossed like a little king. When I waved my hat, he didn't scamper off. He looked right through me. A sudden gust of wind blew past, smelling like cinnamon cider and ozone, and when the leaves settled, the branch was empty."

"During the 2:00 AM pour, the electric crane controls began flickering. We looked up along the catwalk and saw a tuxedo cat sitting right next to the 480-volt step-down transformer. His white bib was bright as a spotlight in the dark shop. He gave a single soft purr into the steel beams and the molten iron in the ladle formed tiny ripples in the shape of a spiral galaxy."

"I was filing microfiche reels of The Sentinel-Leader from 1942 in the local history room. I turned around and a handsome tuxedo cat with crossed paws was sitting atop the microfiche viewer. The machine was turned off, yet the projector lamp was beaming page 4 of the March 1942 edition straight onto the wall. When I blinked, only a warm indent remained on the wooden desk."
